I feel as though I’ve gone hoarse from shouting that mantra, imploring people to sharpen their awareness of what spells they cast from their lips every time they criticize, judge, deplore or denigrate themselves or others. It is, I find, surprisingly common parlance to use acutely negative language to describe the events of our every day lives. This is a category in which ignorance appears to be the root cause rather than malice. However, ignorance can be manufactured through the assumptions that populate those shared environments in which we are reared and reprimanded to conform.

I have thoroughly been enjoying my introduction to the work of John Taylor Gatto, who provides critical historical perspective on education and literacy in America. Both education and literacy have rapidly devolved to the point of infantilism, where the ability to communicate in coherent, impactful ways is now a rarity. I choose to accept the challenge of righting that ship, because I see the necessity for wielding the power of words once more in favor of peace and prosperity. This warrants a maturation, a growth beyond ourselves and our immediate reactions, honing the ability to state our beliefs, intentions and purposes clearly; otherwise, we wail and flail to no avail.

Thanks for reading Home Court Health! I have spoken and written before that the glaring incentive of a system such as Western medicine is to treat sick patients for life; cures and continuous health are not good for business. Such a dependence on Mommy Medicine almost certainly guarantees that the average person will neglect the powerful influence they exact over their own health-state, and therefore, impede their ability to flourish and become an Adult.

Gatto summarizes this emphatically: “Notice what the specific mechanism is: it’s an artificial extension of childhood, theoretically to the grave … and as long as you indulge childish fears and childish appetites you’ve effectively rendered somebody harmless.” He is speaking here of the structure of Schooling, which has ulterior motives masquerading as Education.

To wit: As articulated in a lecture given by Alexander James Inglis - the inspiration for the Harvard School of Education - "The Principles of Secondary Education" (1918) describes the six elements that shaped the modern education system: Adjustive functions; Integrative (conformist) Functions; Directive Function; Differentiating Function; Selective Function; and the Propaedeutic Function.

Adjustive Function: fixed habits, a predictable disposition that responds automatically to authority; the measure of which is giving stupid orders that are accepted, usually without protest

Integrative (Conformist) Function: to make children as alike as possible, because market research requires statistical sampling that relies on generality

Directive Function: diagnosing the proper social role for a child, and to set them on that path for life

Differentiating Function: once in a given layer of social role playing, the minimum information and education is given, not any more that would invite moving beyond that role

Selective Function: a reference to Darwin’s natural selection; determining the breeding potential for children, humiliating potentially high-spirited boys and girls, encouraging the shallowness of thinking and feeling; sex-ed is to highlight sexual pleasure, intercourse as the peak of relating, not the immaterial that makes it all worthwhile

Propaedeutic Function: from the Greek, ‘to teach beforehand’; perpetuating the idea of favored races; improving the breeding stock by separating the ones with bad grades, remedial placement, “behavior problems”; a predictive function to steer the mating pool in certain currents

The reader may notice a missing ingredient in this indigestible dish: the learning function.

I think education is not something received, but something taken. I have long said that my education began in earnest the day I left college. Over the last seven years or so, my genuine intellectual curiosities (G.I.C.) seamlessly led me to study philosophy, language, history, health, movement, astrology, and law. The fruits of a self-guided education have required toil and investment, without the external stimuli to which I was so accustomed. Those outside forces can greatly arrest the faculties of organic curiosity.

My core message in this essay is this: learning is distinct from schooling. Schooling connotes all the mess described above, with the social engineering and peer pressure, that demand memorization of facts as opposed to an inquisitive and interested nature. There is a chasm between memorization and understanding, between memory itself and the ability to execute. In tennis, you might have memorized the technique on a high volley, but to execute down break point in an important match is another matter entirely…

Learning is a resilience to move forward, to build new paths on which we can trek into an unknown yet more promising future, not limited by “this is how it’s always been”. From my experience, there is a fragility that comes from being schooled in such stringent conditions. The expectation that the “right” (“correct”, “factual”, “true”, etc.) information will be disseminated by someone with lots of answers but an intolerance for questions is one of the most egregious examples of out-sourcing our innate powers that nurture perception, problem-solving, and therefore, resilience.

Ostensibly, there is a similar sense of frailty that is based in the constant dis-regulation of one’s nervous system in most school settings: lack of movement, bad lighting, stifling bodily urges for relief, forced concentration, to name a few. On paper, these features of the environment seem more akin to basic training than a school for kids to grow, sourced primarily from the Prussian military paradigm for producing obedient and uniform soldiers. I wonder if parents really intend for their children to be molded into soldiers, or if they would prefer them to be Human Beings. Though I am not yet a father, I know where I stand.

I asked someone recently, “Do you think school is a place for kids to flourish?” The idea that flourishing was even on the table was a bit startling, even as it occurred to me. But isn’t that what childhood is supposed to be all about? The burst of life, the accelerated growth that comes from experience, trial and error, the bounce-back that most children find is their natural way of being. I see it as a tall order for a tree to grow tall and strong, if there is a ceiling over its head.

Another significant factor in the bewildering experience of boarding a school bus and being banished from home for years on end is the abuse of logical fallacies. (This site is a superb resource for better understanding logical fallacies.) Appeal to authority, appeal to emotion, begging the question, bandwagon, false dichotomy. If a curious child should be so brazen as to ask, “How do you know that?”, they are almost always met with a logical fallacy; to say “I actually don’t know for sure” is anathema to most of us, let alone someone expected to deliver answers, rationale and reasons professionally. Yes, knowledge as we know is a moving target, so there is a wide berth for all of us in the earnest pursuit of more experience and awareness. I also trust that most teachers do their best to enlighten rather than darken the mental faculties of their pupils. Still, we suffer collectively from the assumption that most of our world is solved - or solvable - and all that is left is to print the findings in a textbook, test people, and sort out the non-believers from there. For all the valid criticisms of religious fanaticism, the ranks of education are populated with cult-like leaders, administrators, and followers, swept up in the currents of go-along-to-get-along, closely resembling the church-goers they so openly mock.

Since it is the fashion of our time to reduce everything “down to a science”, that should put Science under the microscope. The field of science itself has a neurotic obsession with claiming unconditional certainty over a vast many subjects, many of which are simply stories stacked upon assumptions based upon conjecture - even Albert Einstein conceded as much, acknowledging the essence of theorizing as story-telling. This, regrettably, leaves little room for “non-believers”, and further supports the rigidity of systems that, without a good old fashioned stretch every once in awhile, leads to atrophy and degeneration. Inflexibility is what creates stagnation; stagnation leads to disease and death. All systems are alive if populated by people, so any system which refuses to adapt, grow, recognize error and improve, is destined for a steep decline. Science has staked its claim in mechanization and anti-life philosophies, so I do not take my guidance from that pulpit anymore.

This essay in its current iteration is not meant to expose the myriad myths that are propagated in the walls and halls of the average school (more on these later). As a self-proclaimed history buff, I have had to reckon with the scars from my AP European History course in which my skepticism on numerous multiple choice exams was met with vehement denouncement and less-than-excellent marks. Since my interest was not extinguished, the fire remains to this day, and I continue to un-learn many false narratives that have shaped our understanding of the “right side of history”, as if History has a side. For now, just consider the Civil War (also known as the War of Northern Aggression), as an example: almost unilaterally, it is taught as a war fought over the issue of slavery. Any precursory internet search now would reveal that the conflict had much more to do with debt and monetary policies, foreign interests, and social engineering that turned Americans into industrialists rather than entrepreneurs. This alone is cause to question the way people view themselves and their place in time.

And so, we find ourselves in the Present, a Gift if there ever was one.

The most confronting question at hand is: Is it working? Or, to pull from Native American lore, the exactitude of this question is really: Does it grow corn? If you salt the ground where the corn is meant to grow, the crop dies. If, however, you douse the rows of plantings with glyphosate, the corn will still grow, but it is likely to carry within itself a subtle toxicity for whomever consumes it. So one might say that, yes of course the school system is producing flourishing children, well-adjusted and ready to change the world! Look how tall those stalks of corn have grown!

Well, I would ask: how can one change the world when reared inside the very system that ensures compliance and obedience to the ones dependent on things remaining the same? How can you produce toxic food and still claim that it will nourish the world? From my perspective, these rhetorical questions reveal the dwindling vitality of children, as generations enter the ranks of their local <s>prisons</s> schools and emerge as vulnerable victims to be sacrificed at the altar of the status quo. My vocation in this Life is to support vitality, and that has led me to understanding topics such as natural law, money, social engineering and education, because I see how early the assault on the life-force begins.

The resilience derived from un-learning so much of what has been foisted upon us is indescribably liberating. I have found the greatest transformations in my life have come from relinquishing what I thought I knew (really, believed) and stepping into a new story, one that usually has much more color than the previous black-and-white version. No classroom, no authority figure required. Simply an open heart and mind and voracious hunger for Truth will suffice for the rest of this journey.

Yours Truly,

Tom Foolery

This post is for public consumption. My instinct to write about health is the most compelling one, especially as I know my experience is connected to the web of Healing that is going on right now, in unique and universal ways.

As I believe that a healthy body is a sensitive body, my acute symptomatic expressions serve as stark reminders to visit my Inner World as a faithful practice. To snooze these reminders is to invite chronic stagnation, blockages of energy that turn current discomfort into prolonged crises. Not once. Every pain, every symptom, every malady is in response to your Terrain, which includes all around you and all that you allow into the inner sanctum. I have long said that the impulse to fix, remedy, suppress or otherwise expedite the expression of symptoms is so we can get back to work, get back to life, and resume everything that we were doing before. In our haste, we run the risk of neglecting any and all signposts en route to our new destination, because there is no “going back to the way I was before” … there is only ONWARD.

Subscribe now

The gut checks I receive are reliably timely, useful and all ways in my favor.

When this set of symptoms first presented, I assumed it was poison ivy: I had been galavanting around my property recently, and have learned the hard way that poison ivy oils do not fully slumber in the Winter. The rash turned into a weepy, swollen presence on my extremities, which was uncomfortable but not unfamiliar. Some progress followed, if slow, and I was resigned to some poison ivy soap and the occasional bandage to cover the rash while playing tennis.

By the second week, as the spread continued and progress took the form of a moving target, I became concerned - curious, but concerned. The symptoms that now appeared were bumpy, dry, raw, and unlike anything I could recall experiencing… although it moved across my trunk, my neck, my armpits, almost every part of my body, I was hopeful by the consistent movement.

I have written before about the significance of the skin: it is our boundary, exemplifying and amplifying the sense of connection (or lost connection) that we feel when in close proximity to people in relationship, as well as the necessary separateness that allows our full expression of Self. My mental spiral started to pursue that line of questioning: where am I feeling abandoned? where do I feel infiltrated or vulnerable in my boundary-setting? where is my will-not-power being challenged? These self-inquiries were dizzying, and admittedly, I was so distracted as to not follow them to any conclusion.

This in and of itself was revelatory: if the rising action in the story of health-life is unclear, then a surrender is required, so as to depend entirely on the logical faculties that can lead us astray as often as they can clearly direct. Thinking less is still better than not thinking at all, so I trusted the road I was on that was detouring into presence, feeling, acceptance…

That phase of the healing process was a fair challenge. Physically, the sensations ranged from general discomfort to fleeting agony, as the heaviness and heat of my skin made me constantly aware that not only was I borderline reptilian in appearance, but I was also out-of-ease (aka dis-eased), a shot to my “image” as a health coach. Still, I could not let my Ego take control of the situation, because that is where despair and more dis-ease can poison the waters. Instead, I chose once again to surrender, to accept my present condition as a requisite for ultimate recovery.

After reflecting on the suppressive methods which, for at least two-thirds of my life, had been the go-to intervention, the present moment seemed to align naturally with the trajectory of my health story. With a Terrain lens, I now see the folly in that conventional approach, because it is so quick to rob the riches of wisdom that come from such lessons the Pain Teacher wishes to deliver, with creams and oral medications injected as quickly as possible to mitigate any sensation of pain.

On a technical level, suppression acutely and aggressively pushes whatever bile, toxins, mucus, damaged tissue etc. that is on top (e.g. rash on skin) deeper into the tissues of the body, under the skin, into organs, so that what comes next is likely to be chronic. On an emotional level, this creates a stagnation, a dam that prohibits the flow of Life Fore, qi, water and electricity that is our natural state.

The Six-Phase Table of Homotoxicology (presented below) gives a summary breakdown of the transitions that the body cycles through when sufficient drainage, detox and clearing are out of balance.
<div way to conceptualize homotoxicology is adding depth to drainage, allowing for an even more targeted approach to drainage therapy. If the body can be visualized as a two-dimensional map, it makes sense that drainage therapy should be targeted towards the specific organs or tissues that seem most affected. Homotoxicology adds a third dimension, specifically addressing how deeply the toxins are entrenched and by what mechanisms they need to be eliminated, as these are the mechanisms that a well-selected drainage remedy aims to stimulate.

The original theory developed by German homeopath Dr. Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg identified six phases of toxicosis, in other words six layers of depth which accumulated toxins may penetrate and from which they would need to be dislodged. For instance, mechanisms like salivation and perspiration may be enough to remove mercury from the bloodstream but may not be sufficient to eliminate it from the bones and nervous system. In homotoxicology, drainage remedies are chosen to support whole-body elimination at different levels of penetration, promoting the metabolic and eliminative processes necessary to address that layer and in this way, assist in moving even deeply held toxins out of the body.

My gratitude for the Terrain Philosophy and its abundant advocates gains every time I confront my personal problems, problems that have solutions embedded into them.

The most frustrating hurdle came when I began experiencing lymph-node backup, with spots in my groin, behind my knees, in my neck, and in my armpits becoming swollen and sensitive. Even my calves began to swell - and even as someone who long desired more muscular calves, this was not a compromise I was willing to accept. The result was that at bedtime, I would begin feeling little pin-pricks right when I was falling asleep, which turned into itching and slapping by way of relief. This cost me three consecutive nights of sleep, which is generally regarded as grounds for insanity.

A thought flashed through my mind, though: "What if this lymph stagnation goes on for WEEKS?!” I so often criticize those who attempt to predict the future, that I had to chide myself a bit for being so quick to let fear dictate my vision. And still: I noted the rapidity with which my rash progressed into different locations, inflaming then drying then flaking, and so I did not despair. My reptilian regeneration was fully underway, and impeccably times, as the Year of the Snake was drawing to its close.

Thanks for reading Home Court Health! What I mean is that no medical intervention was used: no herb, no supplement, no special tea. No-Thingness is a powerful medicine in and of itself, as I learned many years ago from studying the philosophy of Bruce Lee.

How can we understand what is happening to us or for us, if our inner world is under duress from constant noise, by way of digestion, obligations, expectations, stressors, or literal noise from speakers or ear buds? The “too-many-apps-running” metaphor is a good one: if our bio-battery is being taxed by a host of programs all running at once, we will be hard-pressed to direct our awareness to the place it is most needed.

As I write this, I am becoming more aware than ever of the necessity for un-plugging, and allowing for the quiet to inform my experience. Truly there is no quiet because we are constantly buzzing, vibrating with charge as our Life evolves subtly. My own habits for stimulation have clouded my judgment and my ability to respond rather than react.
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"c81ee017-c8f4-4dee-9129-3247351d561f","caption":"Liev Dalton has long populated my instagram feed with his brilliant and emphatic presentation of the Terrain Paradigm of Health. To worry about one’s health is to trap energy, to stagnate, feeling more and more claustrophobic as the walls of an Anxiety Prison close in about our Self.

When I say that the hardest thing to do was the easiest thing to do, the only hard part was the Doubt. Shouldn’t I do some-thing? Hasn’t this gone on long enough? Why can’t I be 100% already? Isn’t this how bigger issues are created? All valid questions, to a point, because they are being guided by worry instead of resolution.

I am fairly certain that the snake does not quiver and quake when it begins to shed its skin. Perhaps it sighs, and hisses to itself, “Aaahhh … it’s time.” Acknowledging the timing of this upgrade for my health, my resignation came with a nod toward the brilliance of my body… How fitting that I should enter into a new year, a new season of my Life, with a fresh suit of armor, as I charge into new adventures.

This is not exclusive to skin issues or to my own circumstances. Our collective transformation is ever-present, as cells, tissues and organs all regenerate without our coaxing them to do so, keeping us in flow with the instinct to renew and grow. Fear and doubt are toxins that impede these effortless processes, latching onto our more powerful, positive energies that would otherwise keep us beautifully balanced at all times.

None of us is immune from the necessity to clear our field in some form another. The challenge lies in our sense of trust in the body, the Terrain, and Divine Timing. A worthy challenge, I can now say from experience.

Who do you feel like you are becoming, as we gallop into the Year of the Fire Horse?

A new adventure awaits … you can have a new sword, lance and shield at your disposal, if you accept the gifts given by the Pain Teacher.

Yours truly,

Tom Foolery

Thanks for reading Home Court Health! As we dug in, the discussion turned to the challenges faced by junior players, the role of parents in their development, and the onboarding process for new coaches.

The conversation also touches on the evolution of tennis culture and the inspiring journey of Ashlyn Krueger, a promising young player. The most relevant revelation has been that constant motion - inward and downward, upward and outward - is the most potent signal that I am living my life in an active, responsive way, rejecting auto-pilot in favor of authorship.

Usually when we say someone is deemed to be spiraling, the oft-unspoken-and-assumed suffix to that sentiment is:“out of control”. Although, this begs the question - what is so desirable about control anyway?

If any illusions exist in this realm, Control ranks among the top.

“Control yourself!”

“Control your emotions!”

“Have some self-control!”

All familiar admonishments in most households, schools and churches, which is like yelling at the TV to change the channel when the remote is in another house. How often are we truly the gatekeeper of our thoughts, feelings, reactions and responses? Where can we locate the faulty filter that seems to let in so many undesirables into the confines of our minds?

This is not meant to be a piece on Consciousness. (For that, I direct you to the work done by friend of the show, Mark Gober, in his “Where is My Mind?” podcast series). I credit the peerless Novak Djokovic for speaking so openly about his transition from “Only think positive thoughts!” to the realization that thoughts will populate our experience without our control, and therefore, we are tasked with transmuting them, transforming them from their raw state into a version more useful to our desires. This is pivotal in tennis, where the margins between victory and defeat are so narrow, that any point can turn into a massive momentum swing if the mental game is not guided toward timely practices of forgiveness, grace, confidence and focus. Such humility can also benefit us in our games we play off the court.

Granted, at the risk of overstating the obvious, I believe we are indeed called to assume response-ability for what comes after the recognition of a charged emotion or thought. I refer to this as The Catch: the moment you realize that you are choosing to be less than your best by succumbing to the temptation of being hurtful, victimized or otherwise out of alignment with what you know to be heart-centered responses. The Catch can be immediate or delayed by hours or days… the Good Work is then making amends - within and without - not for losing control, but for missing the mark with our choices. Spirals can be created when we are unsure of what feels like the right repair, and then, the adventure begins.

While I do regularly allude to powers-that-should-not-be, the Parasite Class, and the unique collection of pedophiles and wanna-be tyrants that purport to be powerful, my perception is that they have foregone True Power for the smokescreen of control. They panic when that facade is challenged, they rage when that deception is revealed, and they quiver when power is assumed from within ourselves - these are the hallmark events of the post-2020 era.

The level of control exhibited by those systemic lever-pullers is granted chiefly through another c-word: Consent.

consent, (intrans. verb): to permit, approve, or agree; comply or yield

The yielding and compliance are the complicating aspects of this word, this communal experience, because it suggests a lack of courage or fortitude. Still, I believe we all agree to yield instead of all-ways dominating and swerving recklessly into the paths of others, and thus our assent (agreement) is granted for others to do as they please, not as we might prefer. This does not excuse or condone the willful ignorance to quietly allow the comfortable constraints of tyranny to reign over reason, truth, love and Natural law in favor of keeping the waters calm (again - as if we had any control over how the waters move!).

We become straight lines, rigid and pointed in a single direction, when we adopt compliance and yielding as the default position for navigating this world. Not wanting to disturb the streams around us, we settle for the still waters of conformity by believing that spiraling is something characteristic of the unhinged and deranged among us. I assert that riding the inner maelstrom of feeling is our divine gift as Human Beings, to realize that we all possess the capacity and latent aptitude to spiral intentionally, unlocking potential for thinking, moving and perceiving differently than ever before.

Coiling, spiraling, torquing … all of these terms and their athletic connotations refer to the holistic system of body movement known as spiral dynamics. Spiral dynamic systems connect multiple muscle groups, enabling whole-body movements. These patterns are fundamental to activities requiring coordination, such as throwing a ball, swinging a golf club, or performing daily tasks like shoveling snow or exiting a car.

Our human body is built with structures that naturally follow spiral patterns. Muscles and connective tissues are organized diagonally or in spiral formations across the body, such as the spiral line in the fascial system. When we walk, run, or throw, these muscles and joints move in spirals, creating balance, strength, and efficiency.

<a class="image-link image2 distributing force and tension more evenly across the body. For example: when throwing a ball, the body rotates and spirals through the hips, spine, and shoulder to generate maximum power while minimizing the risk of injury, all from the ground up (and out). These spirals allow for fluid and dynamic motion, making them crucial for sports, dance, and other physical activities. So much of this ballistic movement is dependent on functional joint complexes. Joints such as the shoulder and hip naturally move in spiral patterns due to their ball-and-socket design, allowing rotation and movement across multiple planes. The spine, for instance, twists in a spiral when we rotate the torso, supporting both stability and range of motion.

The image above is indicative of an intelligence that is at our fingertips - or, in this case, is located at the palm and bottoms of our feet. These lines intertwine in a web of fluid electricity that we refer to as Fascia, supporting truly fluid, effortless movement. These interconnections can be called Fascia lines and can be followed by the body’s dissectible “meridians” of connective tissue structures. They consist of membranes and ligaments, both superficial and deep connective tissue, loose and tight. These Fascia lines create stability, resistance, power, flexibility, elasticity, synchronously and brilliantly. Connective tissue structures work in sync, creating a fluid and balanced movement and a posture that maintains balance and direct contact between all body parts … all of this without our conscious direction.

However, the modern obsession with gym-specific movements, usually involving barbells, are dedicated to the development of muscle, a product. This innate system of spiraling and balletic movement is an alternative that prioritizes function over form, with the former supporting the latter; as we know, an abundance of muscle rarely confers beautiful movement skills. And so, I find myself spreading the Gospel of Good Form to enhance the expanding understanding that are undeniably designed to move AND feel better than our current environment suggests.

More on this at a later time… for now, suffice it to say that a gauntlet has been thrown down: find the spiral in your walking movement from this day forth.

So then - what is the best part of spiraling, you’re impatiently wondering?

From experience, being cast into the vortex of inner awareness and the pitfalls therein has revealed more than it has confused. Such is the nature of adventure, that we dive in, pray for deliverance and, willingly or otherwise, ride the waves.

My previous reflections on the Pain Teacher and the lessons that came through have confirmed for me that some level of suffering or disturbance is a necessity for shifting our posture - physically and spiritually - toward the Center. This is the stability, the stillness around which we spiral, and the place we return to when madness seems to reign.

To spiral is to move with an inner grace that looks like chaos, guided by a magnetic pull back to the center of being, hardly knowing what time it is or where the finish line may be located. As Cervantes declared centuries ago: “The road is better than the inn.” Hard to imagine when we become so hellbent on getting precisely where we are going, with the arrogant certainty that permits little room for fluctuation and perturbation, which are known to some as the pivot points of our lives.

This is the essence of my reflection here: that feeling out of control, off of center, is an invitation to do things differently. When the road seems to move from beneath our feet, the answer is not to white-knuckle the steering wheel as it rattles in our sweaty palms. Counter-intuitive, yes, but only because we have inherited the culture of control that insists - from science to medicine to school on down to family - that emphatically insists, “We know best; Nature is confused and mistaken.” I eschew such an idea because mystery is the paramount invitation for intuition, which can only take place inside each of us.

And inside, there is only room for One.

Yours truly,

Tom Foolery

Thanks for reading Home Court Health!
